Lincoln MemorialAll of the memorials in this section are on the Mall. The Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam and Korean War memorials are at the far end of the Washington Monument reflecting pool.

The Lincoln Memorial seemed to be the centerpiece of this area.

I think it is by far the most majestic of the memorials. It's hard not to be in awe in the presence of a towering, seated President Lincoln and surrounded by his remarkable words.

The outside is austere, white. The statue itself is luminous at night; a copper glow seems to come from within.

I didn't think about it myself, but apparently many people try to climb up into the statue's lap. Their efforts are thwarted by National Park Rangers and, in their absence, cameras.

park ranger who resembles Lincoln

Coincidentally, or perhaps not, one of the rangers bore a beard with no mustache, much like Lincoln himself.

I wondered at the time if he grew it on purpose.

Closer to the statue.

Closer still. It's carved from stone of some kind, but looks almost copper in this picture.

Lincoln Memorial glowing

Although this photo is blurry, I like that it captures the glow of the Lincoln Memorial at night.
